The Return of the King Press Kits 2

The Return of the King basic press kit contains 2 discs of photography and special materials, and a pull-out card that shares a “Note from Peter Jackson” on one side and some statistics from the production of the film on the other side.

Rarity and Value – This ROTK press kit is currently (2010) the easiest to find on eBay, usually available for $10-15.

Detailed List of Contents

Folder: The Return of the King press kit contains 2 discs in a printed cardstock, three-panel folder. There is a special “Note from Peter Jackson” pull-out card in a pocket on the far left panel, Disc 1 secured on the middle panel, and Disc 2 secured on the far right panel. The folder is kept closed by a magnetic strip. The front cover of the sleeve features the character composite key art for Return of the King.

Interface:The background is an embossed White Tree of Gondor emblem in metallic green, with a border of unique LOTR icons (star, circle, crown). The music begins with the score from the coronation of the King and the Prologue; this led into another 25-30 minutes of soundtrack before the music repeated.

Disk One includes 4 sections, with a total 40 photos, 7 posters, and 63 QuickTime clips:

For the 6 Cast members featured, there is typically a short biographical sketch, a portrait of the actor himself/herself, and a portrait in character and costume. For the 26 Crew members featured, there is usually a short biographical sketch, plus one photo. Cast photos typically were shot by Brigette Lacombe, Pierre Vinet, Christian Lantry, or Michael Lavine. Crew photos were mostly New Line stock photos with no other byline. In addition, there are video clips for about 20 cast and crew members, ranging from 1 to 8 clips each.

Pull-Out Card: On one side, the “Note from Peter Jackson” gives his reflection on the task of writing, directing, and producing the Lord of the Rings trilogy. On the other side is intriguing trivia related to the production. (Did you know that there were 114 speaking roles in the trilogy, or that it took 12.5 million hand-linked rings to create all the chain maille used?)

Digital Press Kit (CD-ROM) – Additional Photography

The Return of the King Press Kits 3

Overview: Disc 3 for The Return of the King contains Additional Photography. It includes 14 photos plus title treatments (TIF and JPG formats), and New Line Cinema contact information.

Folder: The Return of the King Additional Photography press kit contains 1 disc in a printed cardstock sleeve. It is the equivalent of a two-pocket sleeve, but with the left-hand side pocket glued shut and the disc inserted on the right-hand pocket. The front cover of the sleeve features a detailed section of the embossed-on-metal White Tree of Gondor. (This embossed design appears on many ROTK media and press kit items, including the folder for the paper press kits. It also appears on the Additional Photography disc, where it is easier to see that it is the White Tree of Gondor design.)

Rarity and Value: As best I can recall, this Additional Photography disc appears in eBay listings several times per year as of 2010. Sometimes it is auctioned on its own in the printed cardboard sleeve and sometimes it is packaged with a paper ROTK press kit and stored in a plain white paper sleeve. I would estimate that it shows up about the same frequency as The Two Towers basic (2-disc) digital press kit, and so be worth something in the range of about $20-$30.
