INTRODUCTION: COMPREHENSIVE DVD CONTENT LISTS

This page presents a table of contents for each version of a LOTR film released on DVD, including main feature, commentaries, and special features – both video segments and image galleries. I am putting all of these content lists on one page for easier reference, instead of creating a separate page for each list, or having it available only with the related DVD edition.

As time allows, I will continue adding the length of time for each video segment. Those details may prove of help to those who need to conduct analysis on the materials, and/or create an even more detailed time sequence list to cross-reference specific interviews, process descriptions/demonstrations, or other elements  that may appear in a given segment.

Editions are listed in this order for each film:

  • Theatrical Edition
  • Special Extended Edition
  • Limited Edition

That is followed by Additional Features/Differences found in various LOTR Trilogy Boxsets.

FOTR SPECIAL EXTENDED EDITION [208 minutes]

This Special Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RingTM is a unique version of the film, specially created for this DVD. With no constraints on the film’s running time, director Peter Jackson extended the movie by more than 30 minutes – with more character development, more humor, more story, more of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world.

But rather than simply inserting deleted scenes, Jackson approached this Extended Edition as if he were creating a whole new version of the film. He and the editor, john Gilbert, carefully evaluated material to be integrated into the film, and then worked to bring each scene up to the same polish as the rest of the feature – visual effects were completed, dialogue was recorded, and sound effects were created.

To make sure all of the scenes flowed, Howard Shore composed and recorded new score with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The result is an opportunity for fans of the book to see a cherished world brought to life in even greater detail, and for those new to the legend to gain a deeper appreciation of its wonders.

FOTR EXTENDED APPENDICES

Making the motion picture trilogy of The Lord of the Rings is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and Peter Jackson wanted to make sure he captured it all for posterity.

A video diarist documented the entire period of principal photography. Every drawing, painting, prop, costume, prosthetic, and test was saved. Many departments videotaped all they could, from early design meetings, to location scouting, to the building of the sets, miniatures, and creatures.

Hours of interviews were conducted specifically for this DVD, and encompass every department that had a hand in these films. Everyone – cast, crew, Weta Workshop and Digital – contributed their time, resources, treasures, and memories to this DVD.

This is the next best thing to having been there when this film was made, and an extraordinary opportunity to see firsthand the talent and passion that brought Middle-earth to the screen.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Either in one of the TTT documentaries or in the ROTK Supertrailer, there is a very brief clip of Éowyn preparing to fight an Uruk-hai who has entered into the Helm’s Deep cavern where the women and children are hiding. (I have not been able to relocate which feature yet.) Watch for her on the right-hand side of the frame, hiding behind a large, glittering stalactite, sword in hand, while an Uruk-hai warrior is sneaking up on the left. Although this scene didn’t make it into any version thus far, there are occasional references to it being shot, and a rare photo has appeared in a book or other publication now and again.

Forty-three minutes of new and extended scenes were added, including 200 new visual effects shots and new score by composer Howard Shore.

Just as The Two Towers continues the adventures of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, so do the Special Extended DVD Edition Appendices continue to explore and explain the making of these films.

Over 100 in-depth interviews with the cast and crew were conducted specifically for The Two Towers Appendices, providing a comprehensive first-hand perspective on the making of this film.

Highlighting the Appendices in an entire documentary expressly made on the creation of Gollum. This never-before-seen featurette covers every aspect of the filmmaking process that was required to bring this unforgettable character to life.

The packaging for this DVD was conceived in close collaboration with the filmmakers and artists and includes conceptual sketches throughout. Also featured in the packaging is a new, exclusive painting by artist Alan Lee, which captures the moment Gandalf reappears in Fangorn Forest.

This DVD presents a brand-new film experience that goes further and deeper into the mystery and adventure of Middle-earth.

The brief clips from this reel, plus interviews with some of the parties involved, is located at about [?? minutes] into The Quest Fulfilled and about 6 minutes 50 seconds into A Filmmaker’s Journey. (For an engaging account of this presentation, see The Frodo Franchise: The Lord of the Rings and Modern Hollywood by Kristin Thompson.) ROTK SPECIAL EXTENDED EDITION

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the third and final film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous books. In this Special Extended DVD Edition, director Peter Jackson and his sensational cast and crew have masterfully reinvented the crown jewel of this legendary trilogy of films.

To create this extended edition of the film, Jackson and his editors didn’t simply cobble on scenes that were cut from the original production. They approached this new version of the film as if they were creating the film for the very first time.

In addition, over 350 new effects shots were incorporated into this new version. And, as with The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, Howard Shore composed additional music specifically for the added footage.

Just as with the first two extended editions of the ‘Rings’ trilogy, the Appendices of The Return of the King contain several hours of commentaries, documentaries and interviews with director Peter Jackson, the co-writers, the cast, and the production and design teams on everything from adapting the book into a screenplay to magically turning New Zealand into Middle-earth. An emotional highlight of the Appendices is a documentary showing the cast bidding a fond farewell to Middle-earth and the characters they played.

The culmination of the vast and varied features of this extended edition results in a longer, deeper and more detailed journey into Middle-earth than ever before. This is certain to excite newcomers to The Return of the King as well as satisfy devoted fans of the film trilogy who will experience a rich, extended final adventure.
