101 Film & DVD Release Dates*

This page gives the scheduled release dates for movie theatre showings of the LOTR films, and for various editions of DVD, VHS, and Blu-ray releases for individual films and Trilogy boxsets.

Movie Version in Theatres

  • December 19, 2001 – FOTR released in movie theatres.
  • December 18, 2002 – TTT released in movie theatres.
  • December 16, 2003 – “Trilogy Tuesday” event originally scheduled in just 99 select North American theatres, with the three films shown back-to-back starting at 3 PM.
  • December 17, 2003 – ROTK released in movie theatres.
  • June 2011 – leading up to the release of the Blu-ray Extended Trilogy edition boxset, there was a three-part series with a limited number of movie theatres showing one extended version of the film each week: June 14 (FOTR), June 21 (TTT), and June 28 (ROTK). This was the premiere showing for the extended, remastered version of the films. Since this was a very special fan-oriented event, Peter Jackson created a brief introduction for each film.

Theatrical Version on DVD and VHS

  • August 6, 2002 – FOTR Theatrical version released (2 DVDs or 1 VHS).
  • August 26, 2003 – TTT Theatrical version released (2 DVDs or 1 VHS).
  • May 25, 2005 – ROTK Theatrical version released on (2 DVDs or 2 VHS tapes). LOTR Trilogy Theatrical version boxset released (6 DVDs; boxset for VHS apparently not issued in North America, but possibly in UK).

Extended Version on DVD and VHS;

Platinum Series Extended Version ~ Gift Set on DVD

  • November 12, 2002 – FOTR Extended version (4 DVDs or 2 VHS tapes). Platinum Series Gift Set edition released on DVD.
  • November 18, 2003 – TTT Extended version (4 DVDs or 2 VHS tapes). Platinum Series Gift Set edition released on DVD.
  • December 14, 2004 – ROTK Extended version (4 DVDs or 2 VHS tapes). Platinum Series Gift Set edition released on DVD.

Limited Version on DVD

  • August 29, 2006 – FOTR, TTT, ROTK, and Trilogy Three-Pack released. Each individual film was on one double-sided DVD, and special features on one regular DVD.

Theatrical Version on Blu-ray

  • April 6, 2010 – LOTR Trilogy Theatrical version boxset released on Blu-ray (6 discs US, 9 discs Canadian English/French).
  • September 14, 2010 – FOTR, TTT, and ROTK Theatrical version individual movies released on Blu-ray (2 discs US, 3 discs Canadian English/French).
  • May 29, 2012 – FOTR, TTT, and ROTK Theatrical English/Spanish version individual movies released on Blu-ray (1 disc; audio and subtitles in both English and Spanish).

Extended Version on Blu-ray

  • August 28, 2012 – FOTR, TTT, and ROTK Extended version individual movies released in 5-disc sets (2 Blu-rays and 3 DVDs for each film).
